We know that\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg \u2013 most cyber crime still goes unreported and certainly doesn\u2019t get stopped by the NZSC. In fact, only 339 incidents were reported to them \u2013 but still, that\u2019s a $100,000 per incident. What struck me was that they observe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.govt.nz\/newsroom\/cyber-threat-report-for-201819-released\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">38% of incidents were linked to state-sponsored hacker groups<\/a>. That tells me that this isn\u2019t just the stuff of TV show fiction, but a day-to-day reality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Kinetics prevented $1 million in losses<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4147\" src=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CyberCrime.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"342\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even within our client base, Kinetics saw, and prevented, over $1 million of harmful attacks last year alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FBI reports $US3.5Bn in cybercrime profits in 2019, again just in the 500,000 approx. incidents reported to them, mainly phishing and extortion. They report that its getting much harder to tell real from fake \u2013 and I think most of us can relate to that. A <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/244676\/cybercrimes-remain-worrisome-americans.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gallup survey<\/a> in the US reports that Americans are more worried about cybercrime than violent crime, and the average cost of a data breach (thanks to a Ponemon Institute\/IBM study), is $3.6million, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juniperresearch.com\/researchstore\/strategy-competition\/cybercrime-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total cost of cybercrime in 2020<\/a>\u00a0is expected to be over $2 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent report I could find states that <strong>70% of businesses are not prepared to respond to a cyber \u2013 security attack<\/strong> (that\u2019s a 2018 report)!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We think it\u2019s cause for concern! Our view is<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You simply can not eliminate the risk of cyber attack. The threats keep changing and evolving<\/li>\n<li>You absolutely can REDUCE the risk though.
