_builder_version=&#8221;4.9.1&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a debate raging in our office<\/strong> as to whether the new decade begins this year, 2020, or next, 2021.\u00a0 Regardless, we can all agree on the vast change in everyday technology since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great time to reflect on what we might see in the next ten years, using the massive rate of change over the last ten.\u00a0 Back in 2010, could we ever imagine the technology that we now take for-granted?<br \/>The key question we have to ask as we go through our annual planning exercise is \u201cHow are you taking advantage of the opportunities in your business to reach new markets, to grow, to streamline operations or to reduce risk?\u201d.\u00a0 One thing is certain \u2013 if you aren\u2019t working through this, your competitors are!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mobility<\/strong>\u2013 everywhere.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Smart devices<\/strong>, starting with iPads and moving through all sorts of tech to smart watches and even connect cars.\u00a0 <strong>Bluetooth<\/strong> is everywhere, and the first question we ask when we go somewhere new is no longer \u2018where are the bathrooms?\u2019, but rather \u2018what\u2019s the WiFi password?\u2019\u00a0 It\u2019s even invading aircraft now, not only with <a href=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/how-does-inflight-wifi-work-being-on-the-cloud-while-in-the-clouds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WiFi onboard<\/a>\u00a0but also the way entertainment is delivered on some aircraft.\u00a0 (Personally, I download content in NetFlix to watch on flights).\u00a0 More online web searching activity occurs on a mobile device than a PC, and has done for years!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Internet of Things (IoT)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Closely related to mobility is <strong>the ability to use small mobile devices to capture data<\/strong>.\u00a0 Alarm sensors, cameras, remote monitoring devices that measure vast amounts of micro-data, or automate processes (like the \u2018FastLane\u2019 at some fuel stations or the streamlines security at international customs at the airport or my favourite, PayWave services)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Big Data<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following on from the IoT advances, the <strong>massive amounts of data need to be analysed and used to learn<\/strong>, to discover trends and to make new discoveries to help guide your decision making<\/p>\n<h2><strong>AI (or Machine Learning)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The automated tools that harness Big Data to stream line processes or add insight, make suggestions and help us connect.\u00a0\u00a0 This manifests itself in all sorts of ways, from how search engines present data, how streaming media suggests content to you, or in <strong>voice and handwriting recognition<\/strong> that increase accessibility to technology.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Information Ubiquity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Today you start your research online.\u00a0 <strong>Libraries and museums are<\/strong> <strong>digital-first<\/strong>.\u00a0 Any purchase decision starts with online searches to find reviews, or the best price.\u00a0 Today you wouldn\u2019t book a hotel or a restaurant without checking it\u2019s reviews online, and in the US, sites like \u2018Glassdoor\u2019 meant that potential recruits research employers before applying for jobs.\u00a0 You plan a journey with Google Maps, and big-data and AI combine to guide you around the best route, avoiding the worst traffic jams.\u00a0 My phone even tells me when I need to leave somewhere to get to my next appointment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Social Media<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Because we know you can\u2019t eat a meal without photographing it first or taking a photo of a cat.\u00a0 <strong>Maybe not all technology advancements are good!\u00a0<\/strong> We\u2019re certainly in danger of narrowing our balanced view of the world as we start to select echo-chambers for our sources of current events. \u00a0 Certainly, the way we consume content has changed, and keeps changing &#8211; Spotify, Netflix, Kindle are all household names today that you&#8217;d never heard of ten years ago.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cloud<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>All this has to be kept somewhere, accessible from anywhere.<\/strong>\u00a0 The world\u2019s largest businesses today are the cloud businesses that sell you a subscription to hold and maintain your data, to help you sort and arrange your data and often the tools above to help you use your data \u2013 today we rely on Amazon, Microsoft and Google, often indirectly, for much of our lives \u2013 every transaction from buying tickets to an event, researching a topic, booking travel or even purchasing insurance will rely on one, or more, of these providers directly or indirectly.\u00a0 Often, they will use a service that uses a service that is based on one of these environments.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Digital (democratised) businesses<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I can\u2019t understand how businesses that don\u2019t make money can be so valuable, but<strong> the impact on society of \u2018sharing\u2019 apps is unmistakable.<\/strong>\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s the obvious ones like AirBnB or Uber, Tinder, or their competitors, there are new business models springing up all the time that challenge the establishment.\u00a0 The way we enable small businesses to connect with consumers in new and more direct ways through digital applications is transforming how we interact, and how we find new customers or partners.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cyber-Crime<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>With all these treasures available digitally, we\u2019re more and more reliant on them<\/strong>, and the cyber-criminals know it and exploit it.\u00a0 We do our best to highlight the cyber threats through this newsletter, so readers are well-aware of the most common dangers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>None of the items noted above will surprise.\u00a0 You might even think of a few we\u2019ve missed.\u00a0 To be fair, collating this list took about 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what\u2019s the big deal?\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s simple.\u00a0 Ten years ago, we didn\u2019t do things this way.\u00a0 Today we do, and what\u2019s more, we take it for-granted.\u00a0 It\u2019s part of our everyday interaction with the world around us.\u00a0\u00a0 What will the next ten years bring?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are wondering how your organisation will navigate these changes, then you need a FlightPlan.\u00a0 It helps you understand what technology is important to your organisation, what the risks are and where you priorities should be &#8211;
