{"id":3414,"date":"2019-03-29T08:41:22","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T20:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/?p=3414"},"modified":"2019-03-29T08:41:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T20:41:22","slug":"will-this-really-break-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.kinetics.co.nz\/?p=3414","title":{"rendered":"Will this really &#8216;break&#8217; the internet?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[header2 text=&#8221;What is news?&#8221; align=&#8221;left&#8221; color=&#8221;#336A40&#8243; margintop=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3424\" src=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/BrokenInternet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"401\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing worse than accidentally clicking on a daft click-bait link that re-directs you to a dodgy, untrustworthy website.\u00a0 They are all too common, with news you can&#8217;t trust, and who-knows-what malware.\u00a0 We&#8217;re increasingly able to block the worst sites with our reputation-based web protection, but nothing is impervious.<\/p>\n<p>Even for the news you do read, if it ever feels a bit tailored to you, then you are probably right.\u00a0 Based on your profile, built over various factors not least including analysis of the websites you tend to visit, many of the news sites you use are working to &#8216;suggest&#8217; articles you might like.\u00a0 It seems helpful, but its also narrowing your scope and reinforcing rather than challenging your ideas.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, it also often feels that the quality of news journalism has decreased.\u00a0 In the race to get content out quicker, some of the checks and balances seem to have been cut-back &#8211; for example fact-checking, getting both sides of a story or even just editing the stories to get the grammar better.<\/p>\n<p>[header2 text=&#8221;News could be about to fundamentally change, and we&#8217;re curious to get your view&#8221; align=&#8221;left&#8221; color=&#8221;#336A40&#8243; margintop=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This morning, I came across an [wow_colorme]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=3&amp;objectid=12216638\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article on the NZ Herald site<\/a>[\/wow_colorme], that reports the European Union is going to <strong>require news aggregation sites\u00a0to pay for content<\/strong> (like the screen you get when you open a new browser window, or some of these click-bait sites).\u00a0 Does this mean the larger players will start investing again in media businesses?
