{"id":168,"date":"2015-02-17T19:52:24","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T19:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.kinetics.co.nz\/?p=168"},"modified":"2015-02-17T19:52:24","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T19:52:24","slug":"keep-your-email-password-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.kinetics.co.nz\/?p=168","title":{"rendered":"Keep your email password safe!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most common irritants in modern computing is being asked to change your password.\u00a0 But it is important, especially your email password.\u00a0 Let me explain\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Learning your email address is easy.\u00a0 If I can work out your password, then I can log into pretty much any of your other websites, even if they have a different password, and I can stop you from logging into them.<br \/>\nYou see, once I\u2019m logged into your email address, I can guess you have an account with any number of services \u2013 Facebook, Dropbox, Google, SKYTV, Amazon, anything.\u00a0\u00a0 I can try to log into any of these.\u00a0 If I hit the \u2018forgot password\u2019 link, then that service will email your email address with a reset link.\u00a0 Provided I can read your emails, then I\u2019ll get that message.\u00a0 When I do, it\u2019s a simple matter to change your password.\u00a0 I know your email address, I\u2019ve changed your password, and that\u2019s all it takes \u2013 I\u2019m logging in to your various websites and causing havoc.<br \/>\nAt the same time, I\u2019ll change your email password so you can\u2019t log back in and access your own accounts \u2013 that\u2019s a bit of mischief all by itself.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can you do?\u00a0 Make sure your email password is really hard to guess.\u00a0 Change the password frequently.\u00a0 Use two-factor authentication if you can (where you need a txt message code or similar as well in order to get access), or have an unlock code with a trusted third party.<br \/>\nEssentially, your email is the key to your online world.\u00a0 Keep your email password secret, and hard to guess.\u00a0 Make sure it&#8217;s not one of these commonly used (and easily guessed) <a title=\"Worst Passwords\" href=\"http:\/\/splashdata.com\/press\/worst-passwords-of-2014.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">25 most common passwords of 2014<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Nor one that someone could guess if they knew a bit about you (e.g. the name of your street, your pet or a family member).<\/p>\n<p>If a hacker can&#8217;t guess your password, then maybe they can trick you into telling them.\u00a0 They&#8217;ll lure you to a fake website masquerading as a genuine one, and ask you to log in.\u00a0 As you try to log in, you&#8217;ll key in your password, and they&#8217;ll record that against your email address.\u00a0 Even worse, if you try to log in and fail, then you might think you&#8217;ve made a mistake and try your other most commonly used passwords in a futile attempt to log into the fake site, giving the hacker plenty of clues to guess your email password.\u00a0 (That&#8217;s one reason why all those fake &#8216;phishing&#8217; emails are sent to you about banking accounts, courier packages etc &#8211; they are just trying to get you to log into their fake websites)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/onoff.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-139 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/onoff-150x150.png\" alt=\"onoff\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The best passwords are ones that are hard for you to remember, complex (a mix of upper and lower case, letters, numbers and symbols) and that are regularly changed.\u00a0 Take care and be on your guard!
