{"id":1383,"date":"2016-01-29T22:02:49","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T22:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2016-01-29T22:02:49","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T22:02:49","slug":"the-30-virtual-reality-experience-google-cardboard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.kinetics.co.nz\/?p=1383","title":{"rendered":"The $30 Virtual Reality Experience &#8211; Google Cardboard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160130_083929-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1381\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1381\" src=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160130_083929-1-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"20160130_083929-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a>Virtual Reality&#8217;s been grabbing some attention lately.\u00a0 Hololens, Oculus Rift etc are all exciting new technologies to give us this &#8216;virtual reality&#8217; world.\u00a0 But they&#8217;re all still &#8216;coming&#8217; and they look expensive.\u00a0 Luckily we don&#8217;t have to wait, and we don&#8217;t have to spend big bucks.\u00a0 Google Cardboard is here now.<\/p>\n<p>I found a couple of viewers at the local PBTech store, just $30.\u00a0 Pretty competitive compared to\u00a0the cost of a couple of movie tickets!\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s obviously early days, and for $30 it&#8217;s not going to be fancy,\u00a0 but nevertheless, it&#8217;s an interesting journey.\u00a0 We fired up the system (i.e.folded the cardboard, attached the head strap and inserted the mobile phone &#8211; Android of course!\u00a0 This is a Google product after all!) then set off to explore new worlds.\u00a0 Actually we explored old world in new ways &#8211; a tour of Chicago,\u00a0a canyon,\u00a0 a museum, the palace of Versailles.\u00a0That was enough for me &#8211; I get motion sickness easily and that was my limit &#8211; my kids carried on &#8211; exploring ancient worlds,\u00a0 science fiction landscapes, meeting dinosaurs and all sorts.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty simple.\u00a0 The box simply separates the picture to your left and right eyes, giving you depth perception.\u00a0 It uses the phone&#8217;s motion tracking to detect movements left and right, up and down, so the picture can follow as you turn your head.\u00a0 There are loads of 3D cameras around that developers can use to create three dimensional experiences &#8211; real or fantasy.<a href=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160130_083916-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1382\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1382\" src=\"http:\/\/kinetics.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160130_083916-1-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"20160130_083916-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an interesting time,\u00a0 no one knows what the opportunities are, so they are experimenting.\u00a0 Major news organisations are testing it\u00a0to to deliver their content in new ways, making it easier to convey a story and give more realistic impressions than traditional 2D images &#8211; the New York Times are the most active and advanced\u00a0&#8211; their app is available for free.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual Reality is\u00a0here, it&#8217;s now, and it&#8217;s fun!\u00a0 To get a sense of the devices, and the apps, or how to makes apps &#8211; try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/get\/cardboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.google.com\/get\/cardboard\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virtual Reality&#8217;s been grabbing some attention lately.\u00a0 Hololens, Oculus Rift etc are all exciting new technologies to give us this &#8216;virtual reality&#8217; world.\u00a0 But they&#8217;re all still &#8216;coming&#8217; and they look expensive.\u00a0 Luckily we don&#8217;t have to wait, and we don&#8217;t have to spend big bucks.\u00a0 Google Cardboard is here now.
